A little preparation helps
Help the scanner see what you see.
- 1For paper scanning, around 300 dpi is a useful starting point. Check the image at full size before uploading.
- 2Keep pages upright and flat with complete staves. Remove shadows and avoid writing across musical symbols.
- 3For a difficult image, explore Recognition settings on the upload card. A better source image is still the strongest starting point.
- 4Compare the recognized notation with the original. Dense scores, faint markings, and unusual engraving can need manual corrections.

Is this ordinary text OCR?
No. Optical music recognition identifies musical symbols such as noteheads, rests, clefs, and barlines and reconstructs their relationships. Text OCR alone does not turn a score into playable notation.
Do I need a physical scanner?
No. You can use a clear phone photo, an existing PDF, or a scan from a document scanner. Upload a supported PDF, JPG, or PNG file through the browser.
Does scanning happen on my device?
When you start a conversion, the file is uploaded to our processing servers. Access is tied to your browser session or account. Files have a limited availability window; see our Privacy Policy for retention details.
Will the scanner recognize every note correctly?
Recognition can make mistakes, particularly with unclear scans, dense notation, or unusual layouts. Use the notation and audio preview to assess the result, then proofread the download in your music editor.
Which output should I choose?
Choose MusicXML or compressed MXL for notation editing, MIDI for note events in music software, MP3 for synthesized practice audio, and printable PDF for a newly typeset score. One purchase covers the available formats for your score.
