A little preparation helps
A clear PDF gives the notes their best chance.
- 1Use the original PDF when you have it. For scans, aim for a sharp, straight image at around 300 dpi.
- 2Include complete systems and page edges. Cropped clefs, key signatures, and barlines can change the recognized music.
- 3Choose MusicXML for an ordinary .musicxml file, or select “Use a smaller file (.mxl)” for compressed MusicXML.
- 4Check accidentals, ties, voices, and rhythm after import. Your notation app may lay out the pages differently.

Can you convert a scanned PDF to MusicXML?
Yes, if it contains legible printed standard Western notation. Scanned pages and PDFs exported from notation software are both accepted. Faint, skewed, or crowded pages can need more correction.
What is the difference between MusicXML and MXL?
MXL is compressed MusicXML. Both contain editable notation; the compressed file is usually smaller. Select the smaller-file checkbox within the MusicXML option if your notation app supports MXL.
Can I use the result in MuseScore, Dorico, or Sibelius?
MusicXML is the interchange format used by notation applications such as MuseScore, Dorico, and Sibelius. Import the file into your editor and review the notation. Layout, fonts, and application-specific details may differ.
Does the conversion preserve the exact page design?
The output is newly typeset from recognized musical notation. Page breaks, spacing, lyrics, and markings may differ from the source. Keep the original PDF as a reference and make any corrections in your editor.
